Not much other news at the moment... We're getting ready for Aeson's 2nd birthday this Saturday. Two! Already! Wow!

Ethiopian Adoption Update

I realize that I haven't been posting many updates about the Ethiopian adoption. The main reason is that there really haven't been any updates! My dossier is in Ethiopia and is currently being translated. That process should be done soon. I anticipate a referral this fall. Because of when the Ethiopian New Year falls, most everything (including courts) is closed the majority of August and September.

After I receive and accept the referral, I will get a court date scheduled. It should take about three months from time of referral to go to court. I could either pass or have to schedule another date if all of the documents aren't in order. Upon acceptance in court, I can plan to travel in 2-4 months.

As everyone who has experienced international adoption knows, these timeframes are very general. Anything can happen. Laws can change. Programs can shut down. But, there aren't any bad signs at this point, so that is super great news!

I am getting so excited! Most likely, a very good friend will be traveling with me. We still hope to travel sometime in the first part of next year. It is going to be an amazing trip!

This time last year, Aeson and I celebrated the 4th in Antigua. We hosted a party with our neighbors for all of our friends. It was a great day! Today was even better. It was a perfect day. We started the day at the zoo, met with a friend I haven't seen in 11 years and ended the day with family! Aeson did great with the fireworks - he loved them! He is speaking so much these days. Fireworks quickly became his favorite word followed by OH YES! I hope all of you had a great day, too!

Final Post Placement Visit

The social worker just left after completing Aeson's one year post placement visit! So, that means, the adoption process for Aeson is COMPLETELY FINISHED! Woo-hoo! It's not like the visit was hard or anything, but there is just no more paperwork to do for Aeson as far as his adoption goes. It's exciting! One down. One to go.

Here are the pictures I gave for the report. They're not terribly recent. They're from our visit with with Emily and Lee Anne in Kansas City the week after Easter.

I just discovered (thanks to a great friend, Pat) a great source for printing your blog. You can purchase it as a hard cover or paperback (prices vary depending on page count). You can also immediately download it for $2.95 - insanely cheap price. You customize the cover and the intro. You can also add pictures, determine the start/end date, have others contribute, etc. I have only been playing around with it for a little bit, but I am really excited about it. You can also print the comments people have left on your blog or delete some/all. I've been looking for something like this for awhile.

Aeson loves airplanes!

Every time Aeson hears an airplane he gets very excited. If we're inside, he grabs my hand and drags me to the window so we can try to catch a glimpse. When we are walking outside, he blows kisses and tries hugging every plane that zooms by.

My brother and his partner have a small airplane. Last week after having dinner together we went to see the plane. Aeson could not have been any happier. After crawling around in the plane, we just stood by the runway and watched planes coming and going. We are going to have to do this several more times in the summer. Aeson just couldn't get enough!!!

Road Trip to Kansas City!

Ok, so you have all heard me COMPLAIN A LOT about how much Aeson hates being in the car. This has gotten SO much better since we first came home in August. For Christmas he got a DVD player for the car and that's helped tremendously.

I have always loved driving. So, we are going to be heading out on a 12 hour road trip to Kansas City to meet up with some super fab friends we shared time with in Guatemala. This is a map of our journey. If any of my blogger pals live close to this route, I'd love to see you! We are going to be taking the trip in 2 days and we are leaving either Monday, April 13th or Tuesday April 14th.

I've had several disagreements recently with people I that I love. They don't fully understand my need to adopt a second child. They are afraid that I'm stretched too thin, following a cult (referring to blogging - crazy, I know), and financially strained. Some have outright said that I am just too different from them and they don't understand me. Some have borderline called me trash for living in an a apartment and not having a house. I've been accused of living in an "ideal" world (still don't get that one). I shouldn't be shocked. I am different. Thank God.

How to help adoptive families

I've wanted to write a post about this several times. I've never been able to adequately nor eloquently word this. I don't know of anyone in my personal life that has adopted...so, it goes without saying that most didn't really know how to respond to my adoption.

Lisa at Caroline’s Promise has some great suggestions for how to help adoptive families:

When we answered God’s call to adopt Caroline we were misunderstood, judged and talked about in not so nice ways. God knew that with His help we could handle it, but it hurt.

Here are my suggestions for how you can help adoptive families. I encourage you to ask God how He wants to use you.

*Pray for adoptive families

*Listen. Even if they’re talking about paperwork that you’re clueless about. Listen and ask questions.

*Support their efforts to raise money. Maybe you can’t give alot financially - but your presence is HUGE. I remember standing in awe of the people that came and helped with our fundraisers. The blessings that came from them helped me “get over” the disapointment of the people who didn’t show up.

*Encourage them during the wait and don’t ask stupid questions like “Why is it taking so long?” and “Why does it cost so much money?”

*Don’t criticize their adoption choice. If they adopt from foster care - don’t tell them every horror story you’ve ever heard about kids in foster care. If they adopt from another country don’t ask them why they aren’t adopting from the US. Trust that they have heard God’s call.

*When they travel to get their child - offer to take care of their home while they are gone.

*TAKE THEM MEALS when they get home! What makes us think that people who come home from the airport with their child are any different than people who bring their child home from the hospital? One of the greatest gifts my Sunday School class gave me was meals! But just this week someone told me that although their church takes weeks of meals to people who have their kids in hospitals….this family did not receive one meal when they came home from Africa.

*Try to understand when they choose to “cocoon” as a family. Please don’t criticize when they’re not at church. The first few months home are crucial to bonding and attaching. They don’t need to run around. They need to stay home.

*If they’re struggling, support them and be quiet. Please don’t use their experience as a reason to never recommend that someone adopt. We have struggles with our biological children and our children that come to us through adoption. Your criticism does not help.

My dossier is nearly complete! I have sent off the entire package (including I-171H) to DC to have it authenticated. By the end of next week I should have it back and then it's off to the agency at which point I will officially be on the waiting list! WOW! WOW! WOW!

Cause-2-Bowl

Today Aeson and I went to the third annual Cause-2-Bowl. It's a bowling fund raiser for Cystinosis (you can read more at cystinosis.org). Aeson had a great time running around, bowling and playing with Kacy (Kacy Wyman is the niece of a good friend of mine who has Cystinosis). With all of the fun and festivities, Aeson missed his nap today so we are going to be having a very early bedtime!

First Family Day!

Yesterday was our first Family Day! We didn't do too much because of the cold and the snow. However, I did take Aeson to Big Boy for breakfast. After all, Family Day does celebrate us as a family, so a morning off from cooking sounded great to me!

I thought it was going to be this great, relaxing morning, talking and playing while we ate strawberry waffles with extra whipped cream - I WAS WRONG! Aeson totally had the biggest fit, threw his cup of water several booths over, wiped all of his food on the floor in a fit of rage and then proceeded to bang the table while shouting mama over and over. It was crazy!

We came home and made brownies, which was a much better idea and Aeson had a lot of fun. When the timer goes off, he always looks at me with an excited surprised look and says "re-iii, toe" (ready, listo - Spanish for ready) and then goes running into the kitchen. It's the cutest thing!

I really can not believe how much he has grown and how much his awareness and vocabulary has developed. He is also very, very strong willed. He is positively my boy through and through!

I've been trying to figure how I wanted to freshen up my blog. I felt it needed some sort of theme, so I thought and thought and thought and kept coming back to just letting go of the craziness in my life and accepting all things good. Then it hit me, just as I adopted Aeson, I can adopt anything that I want. It seems like what I want to ADOPT MORE of changes day-to-day if not hour-to-hour. So this whole ADOPT MORE theory is becoming a new way of life (or at least trying really hard). What do you want/need to ADOPT MORE of? Right now, I want to ADOPT MORE relaxation. So, I'm turning off the computer. Now.

Great Friends

A huge thanks to two great friends. I had a work thing tonight for a couple of hours and my finger printing for the second adoption early tomorrow morning. My dad was going to watch Aeson, but he isn't feeling well and neither is my step-mom. So, my two superstar friends stepped up to watch Aes tonight and tomorrow morning. Friends are the greatest!!!

Valentine's Day

I absolutely love Valentine's Day! It is by far my favorite holiday. All of the hearts, love, reds and pinks...it just makes me happy. Aeson and I have been making Valentine cards, heart cupcakes, eating lots of pancakes with cinnamon hearts, etc.

Last weekend I had Aeson's 18 month pictures taken. I was super excited for a few reasons, 1) these were his first photos taken professionally, 2) we have almost been together for 1 year (2/22), and 3) it is so close to Valentine's day, so we had some V-day pics taken.

You can only imagine how happy I was this morning when I checked email and a received a few pictures from the photographer!

It looks like Aeson's thinking... "Does my mom know that I'm eating chocolate at 10am?"

I'm so happy that today was a nice, sunny, winter day. After Aeson's nap we went out in the back and went sledding. He had a great time playing in the snow. He keeps asking for 'sget' (spaghetti), so he obviously worked up an appetite. I'm off to make dinner.

My family is growing

I am happy to announce for the first time via my blog that I'm adopting baby #2 from Ethiopia.

I haven't blogged about the start of the second adoption that I began about a month ago, primarily because the first month or so it seems like you're just doing a bunch of running around stuff that is too mundane to write about. But, I made some sort of forward movement this week. My home study has been completed and I mailed in my I-600a. Now I just need to continue working diligently on the rest of the paperwork for my dossier.

I have to say, there are things that I'm so nervous about... How will Aeson react to a little sister/brother after having my undivided attention all this time? How will I give Aeson all of the cultural exposure he needs, while providing completely different cultural experiences to baby #2? Will I really be able to get 2 kids in and out of the car/house/office as a single mom in a timely fashion? Do I have the necessary skills to (successfully) braid my African daughters hair? The list of questions just goes on.

I do have to say that even with all of the above questions, I am SO stinking excited about growing my family. And I feel so blessed to be able expand my knowledge all thanks to my children and our diversity as a family!

Organizing Turned Reminiscing

I have my 6 month post placement visit next week (I know, it's actually only been 4 months since being home, but they need time to get it translated and down to Guatemala by February). So, I figured this would be a good time to finalize a few adoption documents (requesting originals and re-filing the certificate of citizenship with Aeson's correct name). As I started going through everything again, I quickly became overwhelmed with emotions. All good...even the stressful and not so good are good memories - now that it's over! Seeing Aeson's referral packet where I first saw my beautiful boy's face, brought tears to my eyes. Looking at the photo of Aeson with his birth mother took me to closed eyes and a softly spoken prayer of thanks to an amazingly strong woman for making the single most difficult and loving decision that will forever affect her life, Aeson's life and my life. It's amazing. The story of adoption is amazing. It has changed my life. I see things so differently - more clearly. Thank you Lord for the amazing blessings you've provided me.

Friends from Guate

A couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to visit some friends from Guatemala right here in Michigan! It's very funny how I met Cesar and his family.

When I was traveling home from my first visit trip last December, I sat next to Cesar from GC to Houston. We talked the entire flight. I was so sad to be leaving Aeson and I was convinced that God put Cesar next to me to distract me. We quickly became friends and I ended up staying in his vacation house for a while when I first moved down to Antigua. A couple of months into my stay, I had Aeson baptized and needed local Godparents. I asked Cesar to be Aeson's Godfather and he quickly said said yes, followed by the statement that it was his honor. I've become close to his entire family and feel so happy for Aeson that he will always be connected to such a wonderful family in Guatemala!

Worked from the cider mill today

This morning I just didn't feel like going into the office. It seems like the halfway descent days are numbered and I really wanted to be outside. So, I packed us up and went to the cider mill. We enjoyed fresh, hot doughnuts, cider and even an apple turnover. Aeson fell asleep halfway through the fun and I was able to get some work done on a new program we're lunching at SOZO | Pivotal, XSP&.

Great Busy Sunday

Our morning started by having breakfast with Caroline, Aeson's Godmother (or Godmum as she may say).

After breakfast I stopped to have the car washed. While I cleaned and vacuumed the inside, Aeson practiced his driving skills.

He was a little unsure about the inside of the car wash. He didn't cry, but was a little frightened.

This evening we went to my brother's for a BBQ. Halloween is his favorite holiday and his house was decorated awesome! Great opportunity for some cute pictures of Aes.

Aes loves drinking out of regular cups. He does a great job, too!

Aeson took his first step tonight. He is getting really good and loves walking holding Dave's hand.

Pumpkin Patch!

This is my favorite time of the year! This actually isn't the first time I've taken Aeson to the cider mill, though. I just forgot my camera before and was lucky enough to remember it this time! Aeson had a great time climbing on things and especially loved the red tractor. He cried pretty hard when I took him off so that a little girl could have a turn. That's pretty much when the photo shoot ended. :)

A New Era

Since I've been home from Guatemala so many people have asked how I'm adjusting and how Aeson's adjusting. The truth is it's been hard. It hasn't been hard on Aeson - which is great! There really was practically no transition time needed for him. I on the other hand, was stuck in that dream where you want/need to run, but you just can't make your legs move.

I have been trying to figure out why just about as much as I've been trying to readjust. After weeks of thinking about it, I think I've finally come up with a hypothesis - it's a new era.

Before I left for Guatemala I had my friends, family, work, routines, and Aeson (albeit long distance). Outside of the ridiculous ups and downs the adoption process took, life was exciting and full of hope. When I moved down to Guatemala obviously there was nothing familiar to me. I needed to be a mom, make friends, figure out where to shop, learn to make baby food, etc. I went into that journey knowing that everything would be new and so I wasn't shocked by anything (well, almost anything). In no time at all I was settled and adjusting to life in Antigua with my beautiful son.

Everyone who fosters in Guatemala, that I know, looks very forward to coming home - I was no exception. When I finally knew I was coming home I was absolutely thrilled. I was so excited to incorporate Aeson into my life here and pickup where I had left off. The only problem was, the life I had left wasn't here when I returned.

Sure, most of the same people and places were still here, but I didn't quite fit in anymore. While everyone expected things to be like they were before I left, along with my schedule, I had completely changed. My interests had shifted. Being a full-time mom, which includes adhering to a schedule for Aeson, a full-time business owner and working on my next book, with limited resources is challenging. I guess I didn't expect to have limited resources (contacts, knowledge, support) in a place I've always lived...which is just silly because the resources I need now as a mom are completely different than anything I've needed before.

As with any new era, there are a bunch of things that you need to say goodbye to and a lot of things you need to stumble through - even fail at - before you can establish any type of new groove. I think I'm just about through the saying goodbye part (thank goodness, because that is just naturally a weakness of mine) and I've made a pretty good dent in the stumbling phase. I finally feel like now that I understand this, I can stop trying to change it and instead embrace all of the great new adventures that are heading my way - or that I'm heading toward. I think sometimes I expect things to go really smoothly if I spend a lot of time preparing, but the reality is that I couldn't prepare enough to make this huge, great, life changing adventure happen without allowing for some new learning curves.

As Aeson is beginning to walk, every time he falls I encourage him to laugh and get back up. Well sweet baby boy, mom is going to start taking her own advice. Let's learn how to walk together...and share some laughs along the way!

Traditional vs. Unconventional

Never in a million years would I consider myself traditional. In fact, I would probably take it as an insult if someone called me traditional. I moved out younger than most. I completed high school and college earlier than most. I’ve had more jobs than most…always insisting that you must be happy doing what you're doing and if not then you should find something else. I started my own business with the thought if “they” could do it then so could I (and I did). I’ve always gone after what I want. Never intentionally hurting anyone, but always staying focused on the end result. I’ve been pretty successful living my life that way. After all, I have the most beautiful son that I would be lost without. Again, know what I want and stop at nothing to get it. But then, my sister got married.

What on earth does my life have to do with my younger sister getting married? Nothing really, but it made me think. As I listened to the Pastor unite the bride and groom with his words of grace talking about faith, love and support, I got to thinking maybe there is something good about being traditional. Perhaps tradition is meant to offer a foundation that in hard times you can fall back on. When I got married it was on family property and a judge preformed the ceremony. It was exactly what I wanted and it was beautiful. But looking back, something was missing...the preparation of spending the rest of your life with that one person. The pre-thought of times being difficult and challenges being great. I’m not saying that if we got married in a church we would still be together, but maybe if we gave more thought about this huge, time-honored tradition we would have acted just a little bit differently.

I’ve been thinking about this not just for marriage, but in all areas of life. When you act in a conventional way there appears to be more support when it’s needed. Things are more familiar to people, therefore they seem to relate better, and thereby can help more comfortably. Answers are more plentiful because a vast majority has already been there. Perhaps if you’re not always forging your own way then you can move along a path that already has steadfast tracks offering a sort of predictable outcome.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still glad to be unconventional. I’m happy that I’m partner in a design firm that allows my schedule to be flexible. I’m thrilled that as a single woman I was able to adopt my son, knowing that being a mom is most important to me with or without a husband (although from a traditional viewpoint I understand why a family was designed to have 2 parents raising a child). I consider myself very fortunate to travel and see as much of the world as I can, learning from different cultures and always expanding my mind for new possibilities. So, what’s the point?

I guess the point of all this is to not knock traditionalism -- sometimes it just might work. And sometimes you might need to go out and do things your way, in an unconventional manner, to accomplish what's truest in your heart.

Longer together than apart

Today Aes is 13 months. I realized just how big he was last night when I put a pair of 12 month PJs on him and I could barely zip them. Then it hit me...we were apart for 6 months, 5 days and we've been together for 6 months, 26 days. Can you believe that? It just kinda happened. Of course I've always been his mommy, but It does feel good to know that I've been his full-time primary caregiver longer than anyone else.

Last week I had to go to Chicago for a business trip. Originally, Aes was going to go with me, but my dad insisted on keeping him. It sounds like they had a great time together. After being gone for 3 nights and nearly 4 days, I had the same type of nervousness that I had when his foster parents gave him to me at 6 months.

Aeson is my dad's new little buddy. My dad calls him his Guatemalan Baby. Aeson just adores him. Plus, after staying with my dad for 4 days, Aeson has the most amazing appetite he's ever had. He eats everything...willingly, too! Also, when I change his diaper now, he just lays there. Before he would take off as soon as the old diaper came off. Maybe my dad beat him into submission? He did come home with a black eye! Ok, ok, so the eye wasn't exactly black. It was more of a red mark that he got when he slipped off my dad's fingers...but, it's still under investigation! :)

It is so nice to finally start relaxing at home. When I walked into my house with Aeson after picking him up from my dad's, it actually felt like that's where we were suppose to be walking into (of course, it helped that the cleaning lady had just been there and everything was neat and clean). What a great feeling. I just smiled, gave my baby boy a kiss and said, "we're home."

Went to the zoo

A couple of weeks ago we went to the zoo for my niece's birthday. Aeson got to feed a cracker to the giraffe. All went fine until Aeson refused to release the cracker. The giraffe got a little persistent and then Aeson smacked him. After the giraffe sheepishly backed away, Aeson was sad that he wouldn't play with him anymore. It was pretty funny. As a side note: did you all know that a giraffe's tongue is long, skinny, black and a little slimy? I was surprised by it.

Aeson and I have been doing our best to get settled and calm down after all of the craziness with his welcome home party, my little sister's wedding and just moving back home after being gone for so long. It's been a hectic few weeks, but overall it has been great. I did manage to get some virus while in Guatemala that is causing me to lose weight and be tired a lot. The docs are working on getting it all sorted and I should be back to normal in no time. Below are some random pictures since we've been home. All in all, Aeson is doing great! He is so happy! Everyone loves him to pieces!!!

Sorry for the delay in posting this! I don't have internet at home yet (one thing I forgot about). Here are a couple of highlights:

1) Aeson didn't go to bed until midnight on Sunday night and we left Monday morning at 345am. 3 1/2 hours sleep for any child is borderline abuse...and that's how he behaved on Monday.

2) Flight to Houston was LONG! Aeson only slept for 30 minutes and fussed the rest of the time.

3) Flight from Houston to Detroit was better. Aeson was only awake for 30 minutes (and so was I).

4) My family was waiting at my house to surprise me when I got home. It was great to see them and Aeson did really well playing with his cousins. Pizza was great, too!

5) Being home didn't hit me until I was actually at home. I just started crying. It became very overwhelming and I couldn't believe this part of the journey is actually over.

6) I miss everyone in Antigua a lot! I keep referring to Antigua as "home" in conversations.

7) I LOVE my dishwasher!

8) I was shocked at how small quarters are... I picked one up and thought it was a nickel. I guess I've been carrying around too many Guatemalan coins for too long.

9) It's hot and muggy here.

10) Aeson HATES the carseat and cried most of the way home from the airport.

I'll post more as soon as I can. I am really happy to be home and am going to go grab my first Starbucks since being back! Missing everyone in Antigua!!! Lots of love!

This is all happening so fast now! I just learned that the US Embassy in Guatemala received the 2nd DNA results yesterday and my embassy appointment is next Wednesday. If all goes well I will pick up Aeson's visa on the 24th! Wow!

My return flight is scheduled for August 4th. That will give me time to get in some traveling that I want to do, say goodbye to my friends and pack...oh, I'm not looking forward to packing! But, I think I can leave most of my clothes here. After wearing the same things for nearly 6 months, I am ready to go shopping when I get home!!!

There has been a lot going on in the last week! For starters, we got Aeson's passport! Today we had his 2nd DNA test and medical check up. He needed a shot and was the biggest and strongest boy I've ever seen. He didn't even cry during his shot...he didn't cry for anything! He just wanted me to hold him. He is such a strong little boy!!!

Aeson has a new best friend. Her name is Ana and she lives next to us. They play together every day. They just love each other! They run around in their walkers playing bumper-walkers. Whichever one gets outside in the morning first, they go right over to the other one's window and wait for them. It is just the cutest thing!

For July 4th we had a small gathering with our friends. The weather was great and it was great to celebrate a holiday that I love so much! Aeson hasn't been sleeping so well at night recently, which is the reason he looks a little grumpy on the 4th of July. His sleeping is starting to get a bit better, though. I think his 7th tooth is coming in!

Next step with the adoption is receiving the DNA results then we get our embassy appointment scheduled. After that, we come home!!!

A friend came to visit and we did a lot of walking. Amongst our walks was a visit up a mountain to a cross monument. It was beautiful up there!

On the adoption side of things...nothing new to report. We are waiting for Aeson's new birth certificate to be issued. Hopefully that will happen in the next week or so.

I've known this for a very long time in my heart and soul, but it is finally legal - Aeson is my son! The final decree was signed by his birth mother today! During this entire process I've been waiting for this moment. It is surreal! AESON IS LEGALLY MY SON!!!

I am so excited about this so I keep laughing and asking Aeson if he is as happy as mommy. Unfortunately, he is really big into shaking his head no, so that is all I'm getting from him! Therefore, I changed my question to "Can you believe it?" His answer is now much more appropriate!!!

Oh, and as a very good friend pointed out, today is Friday the 13th. I think Friday the 13th is my new, lucky day!

Getting settled

We moved a couple of weeks ago and are settling into our new place nicely. Our new place is located downtown Antigua where before we were living just outside of town. It is so great not having to commute into town every other day! Aeson is able to crawl around at our new house and he loves his little play center which is just a cabinet filled with his toys. There are way less bugs and spiders here, too!!! Aeson has plenty of room to run around in his walker and he loves when I put his teddy behind him so that he can have a ride, too. Aeson continues to make a ton of silly faces, especially when he is starting to get tired and while he is eating. Speaking of eating, he had hamburger for the first time yesterday and LOVED it! He also had his first lime and surprisingly enjoyed that as well!

I haven't posted how things are going in general lately. I think the main reason for that is because I've been a little on edge. Tonight proved just how on edge I am... My friends came over for a lovely dessert, some hot chocolate and coffee with Baileys. Everything was great until a very good friend didn't want canned whipped cream. I snapped. I made it sound like it was a huge deal to spend 35Q (less than $5) on the whipped cream. Seriously, what is my problem?!? Angie, I'm sorry! So what has had me so on edge? Well...

I'm a little fed up with the lack of support that I've gotten from people back home. Things such as, "no one is holding a gun to your head to be there," "that kid isn't even yours," "you're stupid for being there," and "I've got my own things to worry about, I can't worry about you" are a few of my favorites. Additionally, the fact that I've been here for as long as I have and very, very few have called (or emailed) just to check in (I do have a local phone number) amazes me. I get that this is my journey and one that I am so blessed to be on, but sometimes I would just love the comfort of family members voice telling me that I'm doing a great thing and even though this is tough, everything is going to be great. My friend said it best tonight, out of sight and out of mind. That is sometimes a hard pill to swallow, but I wouldn't change being here for the entire world so I guess I'd better get a big glass of water.

Something Different Today

We spent this Sunday doing something a little different. First, we toured around other areas surrounding Antigua. It was really lovely to get out of town for a bit. Following that we went to a great brunch at Hotel Santa Domingo, which is just a fabulous hotel. The food was absolutely amazing! The only bummer was we didn’t realize we only had about 20 minutes before the buffet closed. You don’t want to pay 120Q at Hotel Santa Domingo at an all you can eat buffet and only have a 20 minutes to eat!

After brunch we stumbled upon a museum and then learned that it was National Museum Day and the entrance fee was waived. We spent a good amount of time walking around. It was gorgeous. Aeson had great fun. I can’t get over how big he is for having just turned 9 months a few days ago!

2nd Birth Mother Interview - Completed

Looks like everything went well today. The only thing that didn't go quite according to schedule was the timing. Originally, I was told they would only have Aeson for 2 hours...7 hours later I got him back. His foster parents were so happy to spend the day with him, though!

So, what happens next? Seems that no one really knows. The most consistent response I've gotten is that PGN must interview all of the birth mothers (approximately 3000) before PGN will start to release cases. It's just a waiting game now. Anyway, I am so relieved that today is over. It was a little stressful at times! A special thanks to my two friends down here (Angie and Beth) who spent the entire long day with me in the city!

2nd Birth Mother Interview

I found out on Friday that our 2nd birth mother interview is on Monday. I have to take Aeson to the city and meet my attorney and former foster mom. I cannot be present at the interview, but Aeson must. If I said I wasn’t a touch nervous, I’d be lying. I don’t think his birth mother will change her mind, but why must the Guatemalan government keep putting everyone through such turmoil?

This week was crazy busy, but a lot of fun!

After swimming and going to the park we went back to the house to have Eli's first birthday party! All of the kids did great especially considering no one napped!

My friend's mom traveled down here last week and brought this awesome booster seat for Aeson! I love it and he loves it, too! For the last couple of months Aeson really hasn't had a place to eat...he's eaten in his stroller, his walker, my lap, on the table, etc. Now with this I'm hoping he'll want to actually eat his food instead of splattering me with apples, broccoli...you name it! We'll see!

Aeson was baptized yesterday at a great little Lutheran church in Antigua. The event was great. His fosters parents came and a few of my fellow foster friends along with neighbors and others I've met while down here. Aeson is so loved and had a great time. Afterwards, we went to a friends for more cake! Aeson got amazing gifts that will be treasured for a very long time! The last picture is of Aeson sitting around all of his new toys trying to decide what to play with first!

On Sunday we had a small going away celebration for a foster mom that just finished her adoption. All the kids were together playing while we ate cake and ice cream. Aeson and Milo had a great time playing together. They were laughing a lot...it was so cute!

Today was a very big day in Antigua. There was the largest Procession of the season that went until midnight. I literally got caught in the crowd and couldn't leave the city tonight. Aeson is so active! He rolls all over the place. When he's on his stomach he can do a complete 360 rotation to get whatever he wants within his radius. But, what he really wants is to crawl. He gets so frustrated when he goes backwards instead forwards. He's getting so close!!!

We just got Internet at the house! I happen to be across the street from the only person in this neighborhood that has Internet. I worked out an arrangement with him so that I can share his wireless. This is so great for so many reasons! We're adjusting well. Finally getting into a routine. Aeson slept until 5am, which is great! Yesterday we went into town by ourselves. It was very liberating. We did some shopping and then stopped for ice cream (my favorite part). Today we've just been hanging out and getting stuff done around the house. So sorry for the delayed post! I haven't had Internet! I'm sitting in an Internet Cafe now. Quite funny watching me walk here with Aeson in a sling on my left side and my computer strapped over my right shoulder! I'm making up for never going to the gym!

Ok, where to start?!? Aeson's two bottom teeth are coming in! You can see if you look really close to the bottom pic. I've settled into Antigua. We got family court approval on Friday! There's much more to say about the trip, but I'm typing one handed and feeding Aeson at the same time. I will take and post more pictures as soon as I can.

Ok, here it goes...

1) I want to have five kids. I guess I should wait until I get Aeson home before I commit to that, though...

2) I get really grumpy when I have creative block, which isn't so great because I create/design for a living.

3) I tend to get angry before I get sad.

4) I won't drink Pepsi...only Coke.

5) I dance around to the intro song of Las Vegas almost every time that it comes on.

6) I sleep with a journal next to my bed because I often wake up in the middle of the night with ideas. If I don't write them down then I forget them.

7) Lately, I love to escape in the gossip of celebrity/star magazines.

Latest Happenings...

Sorry I haven't been posting very regularly! I've been so busy recently and then I had a terrible flu the beginning of this week (still working my way through it). Anyway, onto some good stuff!

I got the DNA results and they are a 99.998% match!!! This is such a huge comfort.

Every Sunday night my family meets over at my mom's for dessert. My mom prepared several beautiful and delicious desserts with a Valentine's Day theme (my favorite holiday!). When we started to eat my mom pulled out baby plates and everyone yelled surprise. My family had a surprise baby shower for me. My mom went running and brought in all sorts of gifts including the highchair that I really wanted. It was a great surprise!

The last bit of business for now...I've been "tagged" by three fine folks. I promise to respond soon!

DNA test completed!

I just learned that Aeson's DNA test was yesterday. This is great news and I'm so anxious to get the results...

I'm sure yesterday was a very emotional day. I just keep praying that his birth mother has peace and comfort knowing that Aeson is loved SO much.

I love this picture because it reminds me of when Aeson was putting everything in his mouth. He was so cute every time he opened up wide during his magical explorations! When he was ready for his bottle and I couldn't get it to him fast enough, he would suck on my shoulder or arm. Or, when I would give him kisses, he would grab my face like it was the bottle and pull me down to his big opened mouth! My goodness, I miss that!!!
